Marking of World Environment Day: Support action "Think Green, Make Clean"

WED20114 June 2011 - As some of you may know, this coming Sunday, June 5th is World Environment Day. It is a day dedicated to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and environmental issues, and encourages discussions and action to realize our collective potential and responsibility to act as agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.

To celebrate WED 2011, the United Nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina will be coordinating a range of local environmental clean-up activities with the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Civil Engineering and Ecology of the Government  of Republika Srpska, the  Association of Cities and Municipalities of the Republika Srpska and Association of Cities and Municipalities of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Currently, there are firm plans of events which will take place in Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Srebrenica, as well as Prijedor, Doboj, Bijeljina, Foča, Trebinje and East Sarajevo as part of the countrywide campaign - “Think Green, Make Clean” – “Dvorište blista, savjest čista”.

Where do you come in?
For the United Nations Volunteers (UNV) programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina, World Environment Day 2011 provides an invaluable opportunity to showcase how the voluntary contributions of citizens, citizens groups and/or community organizations are protecting the forests, waterways and mountains across Bosnia and Herzegovina.

We actively encourage individuals and organizations to find out if there are events planned in their community or municipality to celebrate World Environment Day 2011 on June 5th, or join with others to create one. Most importantly, we urge everyone to join together in doing some form of environmental clean-up activity and realize our collective power for sustainable environmental change and development.

As importantly, UNV is eager to learn more about what citizens are planning – and doing – across the country to enhance our environment. Please share your story or that of an local organization in your community via info@unv.ba

Thank you in advance for sharing how citizens across Bosnia and Herzegovina are thinking and acting green.
